Country Rhythm Guitar Lessons

The key to becoming a proficient guitar player starts with a solid rhythm base. And while playing lead is always fun and exciting, in reality, you’ll be playing rhythm most of the time. And it can be just as fun and exciting, once you’ve developed these skills.

Rhythm guitar is what sets the harmonic groove for the entire song.

What I’ve done in this course is taken a variety of musical beats and progressions that are common to country, new and old, as well as some rock, rockabilly, swing and ballads. I teach you how to play a vast assortment of solid groove patterns that fit over these beats, and how you can mix them together to come up with some cool grooves of your own.

We’ll be using a lot of techniques that are essential to electric style rhythm such as, muting with both hands, double stops, triple stops, finger rolls, string popping and ghost notes.

Who This Course Will Benefit The Most

1. Beginner’s with a basic knowledge of how to play the guitar, such as open position chords and barr chords.

2. Intermediate player’s that are struggling with their rhythm chops.
3. Advanced guitar players who are breaking into the country “chicken pickin” style, and need to learn the techniques used to get that “country” sound.

The Course Layout

I kicked this course off with a beat us country player’s just love, the train beat, and I teach you a half a dozen groove patterns over a standard progression, starting with a very basic 2/4 style pattern, which is something you’ll use all the time. Keep in mind that rhythm doesn’t always have to be something fancy, but you must lay down a solid groove.

From there we work into some more patterns in the style of a few great players from the early days like Luther Perkins, Scotty Moore, and James Burton and Merle Travis.

I also teach you how to play some modern chicken pickin grooves, similar to something guys like Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland, Albert Lee or Vince Gill might play, using double stop and single note melody lines.

Next, I cover some patterns over the half time groove. I’ll show you how to play 4 different rhythm grooves over the classic Merle Haggard progression for “Think I’ll Just Stay Here And Drink”. It’s a fun song to play, and the possibilities are endless!

Rhythm Goove Patterns Covered In This Course

1. Beginner’s with a basic knowledge of how to play the guitar, such as open position chords and barr chords.

* Train Beat Grooves
* Half Time 4/4 Grooves
* Boogie Pattern Grooves
* Shuffle Grooves
* Cha Cha Style Grooves
* Ballad Grooves – Medium & Slow Tempos
* Waltz Grooves – 3/4 & Half Time
* Swing Grooves

Next, we’ll cover a bunch of boogie and shuffle patterns that are essential for playing all styles of music. I take many of these patterns and teach you how to mix them up, syncopate them differently, even play them backwards, to come up with even more cool grooves.

From there, we’ll move onto some patterns over the slower ballad type songs. We’ll start this section out by exploring some “Sus Chord” ideas, so you can add some color, or flavor to an otherwise stagnant sounding chord progression.

This section includes the Cha Cha, 4/4 straight 8th’s, and Waltz style grooves, and I’ll demonstrate strumming patterns as well as finger roll patterns for these. I also teach some nice Reggie Young kind of double stop idea’s that you can use to compliment all kinds of songs with!
In the last section, I’ve taken a few more song progressions that subscribers have asked for, and teach you quite a few more groove patterns to add to your arsenal of rhythm chops!

These grooves include a walking bass line pattern you’ll find common to many medium tempo country songs, and more fast boogie style grooves for songs like Travis Tritt’s version of the Elvis tune TROUBLE and Garth Brooks “Ain’t Goin’ Down Til The Sun Comes Up”.

I also teach a few more rhythm idea’s in the Half Time style of Waylon Jennings, who used the half time beat for many of his songs.

You’ll learn some “Bonus” lead licks when we dive into a song by Sara Evans and George Jones called “Cupid”, and played by Brent Mason. This was another requested song, and although it’s not the most popular song to hit the charts, it’s a perfect example for showing you how you can use the common pattern notes you learned from previous lessons, and mix them up to come up with some really cool sounding rhythm patterns!

For the very last lesson, I played 4 groove patterns over a fun swing progression, and just like the previous patterns, I break it down for you, note for note.
