Hybrid picking is is a style of playing the guitar that involves using one or more fingers as well as a pick, to pluck the strings. Most modern style country players use the hybrid technique to get that cool chicken pickin sound that so popular. You can start practicing by alternating on a single string between the pick and middle finger. Use the pick for the down stroke and the finger for the up stroke. Use a metronome to play along starting out slow and speeding it up as you get your coordination build up. Once you’ve got the hybrid picking technique down pretty good using one finger, try incorporating the ring finger and alternate between the three, pick middle and ring. It will take awhile, so be patient with yourself and have fun!
